The Call of the Sea

Lately I've been missing the ocean. A lot. I grew up living as close to the sea as you could get, and the sounds, smells and accompanying wildlife, both floral and animal, is still very close to my heart.

So, on a sunny but quite 'wuthering' day, we set out to find a nice spot to both touch and watch the sea. It was lovely.

I've been reading Wuthering Heights by Emily Brontë, and I have to admit it's taking quite a bit of mental effort to get through. So much so that I've had to have another book for bedtime reading (Amy Poehler's Yes Please, if you were wondering. It's very funny and good, by the way!) I love the intense feelings and the structure of the narrative, but I have to say the characters are quite unrelatable to me. I've been curious to read the works of the other Brontë sisters, having over the course of 2014 developed a strong liking for the books by Charlotte Brontë (and particularly Jane Eyre - it is thoroughly amazing, favourite book. EVER! At least for now... but Vilette was pretty good too. I could go on and on writing in these brackets...), and decided to pick up Wuthering Heights. A big thank you is due to my dear friend Sofie for insisting on the necessity to read this novel in springtime or in the summer. I absolutely could not have gotten through it in the midst of a bleak, dark winter. The sun and the springing of the season has been welcome things to look up at whenever I've paused, which has been frequent; I've had to put it down for days on end, only to be completely captured by it when I've decided to pick it up again.

Anyway, the book somehow made me miss the wind and the sea, and all things weather related. Heavy, blustery weather that is. I've discovered that the weather here in Oslo is not as temperamental as the weather is in Edinburgh, not by a long shot. I miss the unpredictable weather in Edinburgh - in Oslo you can, 9 days out of 10, be sure that you've put on a suitable outfit for the entire day, and not just for the next ten minutes. This might sound like an absurd thing to miss, but it did make for a lot of interesting situations and you could be sure of surprises every day. I do enjoy the sunny spring here in Oslo, but I think I need more weather.

Have you read any of the Brontë sisters, and if so, are you as enamoured as I am?

Have a lovely, lovely spring/autumn!

I like PopCo, it is magnifique. I read every spare minute, which isn't that many, but together they make out quite some time. Which is very nice, indeed.

The Uncommon Reader

I've just read a book that's called "The Uncommon Reader", written by Alan Bennett. The story is about Queen Elizabeth II. and her meeting with the wonderous world of books. All of her life she's looked at books as something that one shouldn't waste time on. But one day she discovers the book-bus that visits the castle every Wednesday, and decides to borrow a book, and she is immediately hooked! The story ends very un-cliché, and this book was a lovely little treat. Everyone who loves to read should definitely read this book!
I highly recommend it.

Viddy this?

I have just been reading A Clockwork Orange by Anthony Burgess. One of the strangest books I've ever read, but so entertaining. Definitely worth a read, if you're in the mood.

Library finds

The Gun Seller

A bit of Fry and Laurie".

~
I have juste read a book by Hugh Laurie; "The Gun Seller", which is a book about a man called Thomas Lang. He gets himself into trouble by being good-hearted and a lot of exciting things happen. The story is, as in the title, about a gun seller and a major plot to try and sell more amunition and a special, new helicopter that is much faster than an ordinary helicopter. I can't tell any more or I'll ruin the book for you, but the book was a very good one, as well as being very exciting, it was written in a humorous way. If you like Hugh Laurie as the character "House", you'll love this book!

Good Night

Photo: me.

I've just finished reading a wonderful book called Inkheart, written by German writer Cornelia Funke. It's about a 12 year old girl called Meggie and her father, and how they can make characters and things come out of books if they read it aloud. And what's better than a book that's about people that are just as fond of books as myself? I simply loved it, and can't wait to get my hands on the two next books in the serie, and I just found out that it has been made into a movie too! I will have to see that one too, even though I don't really like the idea of turning a book into a movie.

So, now I will have to quote Matilda (From Matilda by Roald Dahl, if you didn't know); "I'm wondering what to read next", because I will probably have to wait another two weeks until the library gets the next book in, and I have to read something. Have a very good night!
